Maintaining White Teeth

Many beauty experts agree that yellowed and stained teeth can age and dull your appearance. But with all of the foods and drinks we consume, it can be hard to stay on top of making sure your teeth are as white as you want them to be. “Over time, your teeth will loose enamel and become less white than they used to “, says dentist Carmichael. It’s time to be proactive and take the necessary steps to maintaining your smile.

Drinks.  Coffee, tea, wine and soda are all fluids that can stain your teeth.  For you, it may not be an option to forgo your morning cuppa, but if you want whiter teeth, you may have to settle for drinking it in less frequency or simply drinking it from a straw. Soda and wine are obvious culprits as well. One offender you may not have known about is orange juice, which has a high acid content and can break down the enamel in your teeth. If OJ is your morning drink of choice, make sure you drink it from a straw.

Foods. You may know that there are a lot of drinks that may be responsible for your teeth being a little less than brilliant, but you may not realize food can have the same effect. Yes, fruits and vegetables are great for you, but they can also erode enamel because of the acid they contain. Citrus fruits and tomatoes can erode enamel, so eat them in moderation.

Care. Aside from diet, you can maintain your teeth by simply brushing them and flossing them as directed. A lot of toothpastes these days already have a built-in teeth whitener, so chose one that fights plague in addition to whitening.

My Tooth Spa, a dentist in Carmichael and Fair Oaks says, “Of course you may still not be happy with the color of your teeth despite all of the care you take to maintain them.” Once or twice per year, you can get them professionally whitened to get them back to the brilliant shade they once were. Many dentists offer free teeth whitening with their services, so it is a good idea to see a dentist regularly who can take care of your overall and cosmetic dentistry.
