Most people want to experience nature at its most beautiful when they go walking. USA holidays allow you to do just that, and one of the best places to visit is the Rocky Mountains National Park. The park is very popular with visitors, welcoming over 3 million people every year. Full of beautiful valleys and forests, it also has some massive mountains, with 74 peaks over 12,000 feet.

There are plenty of activities for visitors in the 265,000 acres of space, which is very well preserved, including horseback trails, rock climbing, fishing, camping and skiing in the winter. However, one of the most popular is hiking.

The Rocky Mountains National Park boasts over 350 miles of hiking trails, making it a key hiking destination for anyone who is keen on walking. USA trips are popular with hikers due to the variety of walking opportunities on offer, but the Rocky Mountains are especially popular. With stunning peaks, beautiful lakes and waterfalls, and excellent views, hiking here offers opportunities for beginners and very advanced hikers, so there is something for everyone.

Things to Remember

When travelling to the Rocky Mountains National Park to go walking, USA authorities insist that you have a backcountry permit if you are going to be staying overnight, so you should arrange this in advance. You should also be aware of sudden weather changes, and take lots of food and water whenever you go hiking. Be aware of your abilities, and be especially careful in winter where deep snow affects much of the park. Consider the many advantages of travelling with a walking group and an experienced leader, as it will free you up to relax and enjoy the experience more with everything arranged for you.

Visiting the Park

The gateway to the park is Estes Park, a village in Colorado 75 miles from Denver, where you will find lots of shops and restaurants. The park is open all year, but remember that in the winter months the access may not be as good. For example, the Trail Ridge Road, which is over 12,000 feet high and 45 miles long, is normally closed from November to May
