An Outsider?s Guide to Memphis Restaurants: Germantown Commissary

How I came to find Germantown Commissary:  My wife and I live in Germantown, just off Hacks Cross & Poplar Pike.  Germantown Commissary was a highly recommended BBQ joint by our neighbors when we first moved to Memphis.

First impression—Germantown Commissary is a local’s favorite for barbeque, particularly ribs.  We managed to squeeze into a rare parking spot and get seated at one of the tables.  The atmosphere is quaint, with a local’s flavor.  Looking around, we saw articles from various magazines (including Playboy) citing Germantown Commissary as a top BBQ restaurant in Memphis.  Most of the articles cited Germantown Commissary’s expertise in pork ribs.

Food—My wife got the pulled pork sandwich, while I got a combo pulled pork & ½ rack of ribs.  It’s definitely a good vibe, with the Memphis dry-rubbed ribs & tangy BBQ sauce.  The only down side is that I couldn’t get a decent beer.  I settled for a coke in one of the personalized Germantown Commissary cups with the restaurant’s motto, “So good you’ll slap yo mama!” on the side.  Our kids loved it, and that was fine for us.

Overall, I do believe Germantown Commissary represents Memphis’ finest BBQ.  With that said, I also think that you can find great BBQ in any number of Memphis’ fine barbeque restaurants (Travel & Leisure recently rated Memphis as the country’s finest place for barbeque), if you do not live in Germantown.
